A Little Bit of Everything

A Little Bit of Everything

I’m working on a new manuscript- a fantasy (ish?) novel. I haven’t straightened out all the details of the genre, yet. But it’s a retelling of a fairy tale. I am having so much fun and am up to about 3,000 words. I’m trying not to divulge too much or even share it with my critique groups yet, because I just want to get that shitty first draft finished instead of obsessing about all the things I want to change in the first couple chapters, ha. Then I’ll share more widely. For now, I’m enjoying creating a world. I can only begin to imagine how much fun J.K. Rowling had creating the world she did in the Harry Potter series!

I’m also reading. I just finished re-reading Carolyn Turgeon’s Godmother, which, if you haven’t read it, you should. It’s beautiful and terrible and I adore it. I’m also reading, for the first time, Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley. She’s the author of my favorite book evah- Beauty. So I’m gaining some inspiration and just letting myself soak up the loveliness in these fairy tale remakes. Departing from the more serious side of Women’s Fiction has been a nice break for me!

Speaking of Women’s Fiction, I’m still shopping my novel, Ditch Flowers, to literary agents. I’ve got a partial out right now, and have had some fulls (2 rejected at this point) and I’m nowhere near quitting. It is my hope to see this work published, to gain an audience for my words and the story I am hoping means something to someone else as much as it does to me.

And lastly, I’ve been entering poetry chapbook contests- five at this count, as well as submitting poems to literary journals and e-zines. I should hear something in the next 6-8 weeks. Wish me luck!
